What is Mala Leche y Punto?

2.JPG

"Mala Leche y Punto!" is a personal music magazine project that combines print and digital editions.

The name comes from the definition that musician Rosendo Mercado once gave to rock and roll: attitude, rebellion, and “mala leche*”, understood as the direct, uncompromising energy that characterizes this genre.

The magazine was conceived as a space to convey that same essence through its layout and editorial design.

It all started as a project for the Digital Prepress course, in which we were asked to create all the artwork and layout for an eight-page magazine. As a student, I took special care with the composition of the pages, the balance between typography and imagery, and the visual consistency between the physical and, later, the digital format.

My goal was for both the logo and the reading experience to reflect the rawness, power, and authenticity of the music it portrays, with a style that broke away from the traditional layout of celebrity and history magazines and the schematic nature of newspapers.

*MALA LECHE: Tener “mala leche” is a Spanish expression that means to have a bad temper or be in a bad mood.

How is the
project progressing?

Then, during a web development course, I realized that this project couldn’t just be left to fall by the wayside.

I decided to take it a step further and start working on a web design prototype that would give it continuity in the digital environment. The idea was to draw inspiration from major music publications such as Mondo Sonoro, Rolling Stone, and Efe Eme to build a platform that would not only publish content but also foster a community around music.

The process began with a first article titled “Significance of women in the world of rock and roll”,  topic that I felt was essential to highlight from the very beginning. From there, I began designing the prototype in Figma, where I explored how to translate the essence of the magazine to a digital space: visual hierarchy of articles, user interaction, adaptability to different devices, and a design hat balanced modernity with the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll.

This project, being an exercise in editorial and web design, this project also represents a space for personal exploration,  one where I’ve been able to develop technical skills, express my interests, and shape my own creative identity.

With Mala Leche y Punto, I seek to demonstrate how a project born out of a passion for music can evolve into a forward-thinking platform, open to growth and community building.
